Two Yale seniors have closed a $5.1 million pre-seed round to build Series — an AI-powered social network that operates entirely within Apple's iMessage. No new app to download. No new platform to learn. Just the messaging app already sitting on hundreds of millions of phones, reimagined as a social layer powered by artificial intelligence.

The round was led by Pear VC and drew participation from a handful of notable angels, including Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman and Venmo co-founder Iqram Magdon-Ismail — two operators who know a thing or two about building products people actually use every day.

The bet behind Series is a contrarian one: that the next social network doesn't need to be a destination at all. Instead of asking users to open yet another app, Series meets people where they already are. AI handles the connective tissue — surfacing conversations, suggesting connections, and keeping things moving — while iMessage provides the familiar, frictionless wrapper.

It's an insight rooted in behaviour. The average person opens their messages app dozens of times a day. The battle for attention, Series argues, is already won — you just have to show up in the right place.

Whether a social network can truly thrive inside a platform it doesn't control is the big open question. Apple has historically been selective about what it allows in iMessage's ecosystem. But for two seniors who haven't even graduated yet, raising $5.1 million on the idea alone says investors think the question is worth asking.
